What makes Tenura’s Living Aids the best on the market?

The products are made from silicone and are Non-Toxic. These qualities make them great for any food preparation areas like kitchens. When using our Tenura anti-slip mats, the kitchen can be kept more hygienic due to the easy to wipe down the surface of silicone and its antimicrobial properties. It is an essential feature of our products as they are targeted towards children, the disabled, and the elderly who are more vulnerable and less immune to diseases. So, keeping a tidy, clean kitchen is paramount to their health. Another great use of the anti-slip mats includes placing them under chopping boards to avoid unwanted movement, and our anti-slip coasters keep your drink from being knocked over due to the silicones' grippy surface.

We also have been in the industry for over 20 years, so we know our stuff!

Are Tenura products suitable for me?

If you have difficulty grasping items due to a condition such as arthritis, then Tenura products can be incredibly useful in your daily life. We have things that can help you at home, your office or when out and about. You can explore the Tenura range on our website.

Our products are the best on the market and have unrivalled quality and benefits. For example, our products are microwave and dishwasher safe, but sadly our competitors can’t say the same.

Tenura products boast the following properties:

  • Non-toxic
  • 100% silicone
  • Antimicrobial
  • We don’t use cost-saving chemicals

What are Tenura’s Daily Living Aids made from, and why?

Tenura’s Daily Living Aid range is 100% silicone, which means that the products are non-toxic (as chemically inert), washable and dishwasher safe. Due to the gripping properties of the silicone, you are less likely to cause spillages or harm to yourself when using these products in conjunction with chopping boards or as a coaster as items placed on the anti-slip mat/coaster will move less compared to an ordinary counterpart.

cutlery-grip-2The anti-slip mats help prevent injury especially if you chose a suitable colour to indicate a message. Many of our customers choose red mats to highlight that the area could be hot and may require extra attention. Our yellow mats tend to be used in conjunction with the message that the products placed on the mats are general items a person doesn’t want to lose. Such things could include glasses or hearing aids. These non-slip mats are also the most visible in low light areas. Finally, the blue silicone products lend themselves to bedrooms and living rooms. The colour blue is calming and helps to provide contrast to lighter surfaces like wooden furniture or white tiles. If you like to know more about this, you can read our Highlight Objects & Hazards with Tenura Daily Living Aids blog.

Other great features of our silicone living aids is there very high-temperature threshold of 250°C and the fact they are very difficult to rip/tear. Again, this makes them perfect for the kitchen but also hotter work environments such as working with cars and hot power tools. By placing hot power tools on a red anti-slip mat, it indicates a warning to others that those tools may be hot. It also protects the surface on which the mat has been placed and stops the power tools being knocked over or moved as easily. Use the anti-slip mats in combination with our anti-slip grip strips on your work tools to allow you to complete a task without as much strain on joints. If you are feeling adventurous, you can also apply our Tenura grip strips in medical practices or offices or to door handles, crutches and more, as they are safe to use anywhere.

What makes Tenura’s Daily Living Aids Antimicrobial?

To make our silicone products antimicrobial, we add a small percentage mix of Silver Nitrate. Silver has been used in the medical industry for years and can be found in wound dressings, creams and as a coating on medical devices. The silver used in our silicone products is toxic to bacteria, along with some algae and fungi. However, it is not toxic to us. Making our products fantastic for uses in kitchens, medical practices and for vulnerable people who are prone to diseases. To learn more about this, you can read our blog on how Rubber Bath Toys Are A Haven For Bacteria. It is also worth noting that Tenura’s products do not feature toxic, cost-saving chemicals or substances, like phthalate plasticisers, that are banned or restricted in some parts of the EU and USA.

In accordance with article 58 of the BPR, this article has been treated with a biocidal product. Silver nitrate (CAS 7761-88-8) has been added to create antimicrobial properties.

Please note that we accept both debit and credit cards for both Visa and Mastercard.

What is non-slip material and how does it work?

It’s complicated. Silicones are synthetic polymers (a long chain of repeated molecules). The bond between the Silicon and the Oxygen is stronger than the Carbon-Carbon bond. Meaning it has stable thermal stability (resistance to mixing), so they are great for environments that are hotter or the organic equivalent (Silicon) would decompose. The properties of the silicone can be changed by substituting organic chemical groups for other chemical groups (such as the methyl group) and cross-linking. This change is what can make silicone properties change. Properties that can be affected are the flexibility, water repellence, and its solubility (dissolvable). Some of these qualities directly correlate to coefficients of friction (levels of grip).

New Years Resolutions for Persons with Disabilities 2020

Start your New Year’s Resolutions today and make a positive impact on your life and others. The UK's top New Year Resolution is to increase their amount of exercise. This is closely followed by losing weight which 44% of the population have made.

Tenura has come up with inclusive New Year Resolution’s for Disabled Persons, so take a look and see if there are any you want to adopt to better yourself and others in 2020!

  1. crutchOutdoors - Explore the outdoors and local area! This can be simple if you plan a route and do some research. You may need to check; the gradient of the hill, the type of terrain, the distance the walk entails, to make sure it is accessible. Towpaths are a great place to start as they tend to be a flatter surface than ordinary pavements. You never know, you may enjoy studying maps or find a love for nature and the outdoors. Some of our daily living aids may help you whilst out and about so take a look at our range.
  2. Health - Make your health a priority. Try making good life decisions surrounding your health like making the right food choices such as; eating plenty of vegetables and drinking water. Another way to improve your health is by getting into routines. A routine can help you establish and keep to your healthy decisions. If you know at 10 am you go for a walk in the park, it isn’t as daunting of a task the next day. The more times you do it, the more you will embrace it and see the benefits. Make sure the goal is achievable as everything is within moderation. Setting yourself an unattainable target will mean you aren’t likely to continue with the resolution.
  3. fitnessFitness - Try exercises that suit your ability level. If you have a low mobility level, you could try small movements each day. As you improve, you can start to lift objects such as a soup tin. Hold the tin out with your arm 90° to one side of your body, or as close to this as possible. Repeat this exercise on each arm twice a day. Hold the tin there for as long as possible. This will help build strength in both arms. Make sure you choose appropriate exercises to your mobility level to avoid causing harm. Ask your carer as they may have some knowledge of alternative exercises you can do to increase your fitness level. If you attach Tenura Self Adhesive Non-Slip Strips to the object you are lifting, the object is less likely to slip out of your hand. Therefore, you can avoid causing harm to yourself or others.
  4. Socialise – Join community groups specialised for persons with disabilities. Local charities have great initiatives such as; Public Health, Community ‘clean-up’ and Inter-faith programmes. Make an effort to get to know your carer, this is a great idea as you spend time together already and it can help them to understand you better and vice versa. If you are a young person with a disability, there are fantastic social media platforms like The Mighty, which allows you to socialise from the comfort of your home. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to connect with us and to stay up-to-date with our product range and inspirational posts.
  5. jobGet a job – Charities in our local area offer work to persons in their care. Such roles include working in a café where you can learn mathematical skills which help to keep your brain engaged. It also provides you with an opportunity to meet more of the local people and socialise, which is important as having a disability can be isolating at times. Other job roles they offer is working at a gardening centre or through their social enterprise schemes. These can allow you to develop skills in catering, horticulture, retail, media, customer services and animal care.
  6. Optimism – Try to have a positive outlook on life. Include yourself in groups and social activities that can increase your mental wellbeing. This is important to help achieve an optimistic point of view. This resolution can be an eye-opener, allowing you to feel better about yourself and others. If you are introverted, you may want to read inspirational quotes. The Japan Paralympic games will display plenty of admirable people to follow and gain confidence from as they promote equality on an international level. You may be tempted to get involved in some of the sports you see the athletes competing in, exercise is so good for a positive mindset.
  7. Test yourself – You may no longer be in education, but training the brain can improve your mental health and will also help with your memory and logical skills as it stimulates the mind. It can also increase your concentration power. It is easy to get involved in brain training activities as they can be found on the internet, mobile apps, newspapers and magazines making them incredibly accessible.

To succeed at your New Year's Resolutions, you could write them down or get creative and make a poster to refer back to. Get your family, friends and carers involved so they can aid you in taking steps towards your goals and help you have a Happy New Year.

Another way to make sure your resolutions will be successful is to make them small. Then build on them throughout the year. An example of this could be you want to be more social, so you decide to join a group. Following this, you can work towards joining a social enterprise.  In years to come, you then may decide to take on an advocate role for that organisation/group. You need to lay the groundwork to make your New Year Resolutions work for you.

Highlight Objects & Hazards with Tenura Daily Living Aids

Tenura’s range of anti-slip and grip enhancing products are designed to create independence around the home. With their excellent anti slip qualities, they make day to day tasks easier and more manageable by increasing grip and comfort.

Additionally, their vivid shades of blue, red and yellow allow Tenura daily living aids to stand out and be more noticeable, particularly in environments with more neutral décor. With this feature they can be used to highlight important objects or potential hazards.

The colours can be beneficial in the following ways:

Yellow_Coaster_Square_2Yellow

The lightest colour and in times of low lighting or even when it is dark, yellow is the most visible. Tenura products in yellow would be ideal to use at night, such as coasters for glasses of water and yellow mats for essential items such as glasses or hearing aids.

Red

Corner_Table_Mat_RedThe colour Red commands attention, whether it be for warnings and danger or for something important you didn’t want to miss. Resting pans or dishes that have just come off the stove or out of the oven on a red Tenura mat will help to warn yourselves and others that the pan is still hot, and much like silicone trivets, it will protect the surface while the pan or dish cools. It is safe to do this as Tenura mats are heat resistant up to 250°C.

Blue

Blue is a cool, calming colour and due to this is suitable for use in places of rest such as bedrooms and living rooms. As it can provide contrast to lighter wooden furniture, placing items upon them means that it is easier to spot.

Organise the Kitchen with Tenura

Food prepping in the kitchen is key to helping the later processes. Using Tenura daily living aids to organise your prep area, whether it be for organising utensils, prepped food or both, you can create a contrast of colours to help you identify items much quicker. Red mats can also be used to signify sharp knives or electrical items.

The Tenura Grip Strips and Rolls are also ideal kitchen aids. They are available in both blue and red, ideal for adding enhanced grip, but also can be a useful reminder that blue handles are safe, and those that are red could possibly still be hot.

Tenura in the Garden

With plants, furniture and tools a lot of the time being virtually the same colour, easily identifying that trowel you put wrench copydown can sometimes take longer to find than it should.

Tenura grip strips and rolls can be used to help in these situations by wrapping around tools and handles to enhance grip and make them stand out from the rest of the garden décor. Wrapping the material around tools such as spades will help to make tasks more comfortable too, in addition to the grip increase you will benefit from by using Tenura strips and rolls.

Tenura strips are pre-cut and ready to be wrapped around the object of your choice allowing you a quick, ready to use, grip-enhancing solution. Rolls are available in various sizes, colours and adhesive and non-adhesive versions which increases the application possibilities and they can also be cut to size to suit your needs.

Fixing the Plastic Crisis

Plastic-crisisIn modern day Life it is virtually impossible to avoid plastic, but with the growing epidemic of plastic pollution it is in our best interests to minimise the amount we use.

Plastics harm the environment by seeping into soil and water, degrading our beaches, killing wildlife, choking our oceans and killing millions of marine animals each year.

There is now a huge campaign to reduce the plastic foot print by governments, environmental groups and worldwide supporters.

We are part of the problem and now need to be part of the solution.

Our problem is that we live in a throw away culture and urgency is needed to move away from this lifestyle involving single usage plastic.

Even If we make little changes in our day to day life, that can help to reduce our own plastic footprint.

Even if we each make little changes in our day to day lives, together they will have a huge impact in reducing the plastic footprint.

Below are a few pointers to go plastic free at home.

Plastic Bags

Purchase reusable bags made from durable, environmentally-friendly materials that will last time and time again.

Plastic Bottles

Refillable, glass water bottles are much better for the environment and yourself.

Plastic Straws

Skip a straw or buy a reusable metal one.

Shop Local

local Markets or local farmers markets are ideal for plastic free shopping as most items are displayed loose and stall holders more likely to accommodate your needs. Most food hasn’t travelled miles to get to you therefore the carbon footprint is low.

Buy in Bulk

Reduces the amount of plastic packaging.

Reusable Party Cutlery

The amount of single use partyware we through away in our lifetimes if we thought about it would add up to a considerable amount.

Recycle When Possible

This will give your used packaging the best chance of being disposed of correctly to reduce the pollution created from waste.

The ‘Attenborough Effect’ has sparked a rise in beaches around the UK having a big clean up. With a rise in 18 beaches since last year being awarded for their litter free sands. Over the past 12 months, this movement has led to a 53 percent reduction in single-use plastic.

Large fast-food and coffee franchises such as McDonalds, Nandos and Cost Coffee are leading the way in the eradication of their single-use, plastic straws.

Certain Supermarkets are also taking action to reduce plastic packaging on their products by creating plastic-free aisles so consumers can buy products loosely, or bring their own containers.

The UK has also banned products containing microbeads within the last year.

What Effort is Tenura Making?

new-tenura-cardboard-retail-packsHere at Tenura we are making the move from plastic to cardboard packaging, starting with our jar and bottle openers. By 2020, the entire Tenura range will be packaged in cardboard retail boxes.

Cardboard is a very durable material, which allows products to withstand long transportation times. It prevents moisture from accessing goods within the packaging and prevents them from becoming damaged.

Cardboard is biodegradable and recyclable, with it also being more easily and widely recycled than any other material. With it being a lighter packaging, this would also reduce the emissions used when transporting.

For more specific information on our new cardboard packaging, or to place an order, you can contact the Tenura sales team via phone. Alternatively complete our contact us form and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Abolish Spilt Drinks this Summer with Tenura CupCaps

tenura cup cap for drinksWith the summer months arriving and the May Day Bank Holiday weekend around the corner, we hang on to thoughts of backyard BBQs, summer garden parties and picnics in the sun.

You don’t want any distraction from the fun and relaxation of these special times, so why not make use of the Tenura daily living aids range to help make life a little easier on these occasions?

In the warm weather, you need to stay hydrated, but enjoying a little tipple (soft drinks for the kids) is also a welcome treat. Harassment from wasps and flies however is not and is in fact an irritating distraction. Even worse, when wasps get angry for no reason and decide to attack you it often results in a spilled drink. We don’t have a solution for wasps and insects crashing your party, but we can protect your beverages in the form of Tenura CupCaps.

Tenura Cups are stretchable, self-sealing, silicone caps designed to fit over the tops of mugs, cups, cans and glasses. Applying these to your drink container creates a spill proof lid that no bugs can get through. They come with an eyelet in the centre for the insertion of a straw so you can enjoy your drink.

Made from 100% antimicrobial silicone, Tenura CupCaps are completely free from plasticisers, making them non-toxic and suitable for use by all ages. Washable either by hand or dishwasher lends to their durability.

The Tenura CupCaps come in a pack of 2, with each pack containing 6cm and 8cm diameter CupCaps.

Tenura CupCaps can be purchased directly through our website, along with the rest of Tenuras' range of daily living aids. All orders to the value of £50 or more will be sent free of charge within the mainland UK. Should you have any questions or queries about our products, please speak to us via phone and we would be more than happy to help. Alternatively, use the contact us form on the site and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Rubber Bath Toys A Haven for Bacteria

rubber-duck-in-bathSwiss and American researchers recently released a study stating that bath-time toys, rubber ducks predominantly in this case, become a haven for disease-spreading bacteria.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, ETH Zurich and the University of Illinois, counted the microbes found in the murky, stagnant water that resided in some of these bath-time toys. In 4 out of the 5 toys studied, they found that the water squeezed out of them contained “potentially pathogenic bacteria” such as Legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterium which is “often implicated in hospital-acquired infection”.

While differences have been found in others, many bath-toys have produced similar results and the reason is down to the material. The plastic materials, with low-quality polymers in them, release carbons that can serve as food for the bacteria. While some of the bacteria is present in the water, bodily fluids, various contaminants and soap are also added. The additional components add microbes and nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous and when the bacteria are introduced to this balmy brine and the carbon released from the bath-toys material it creates a formula that produces a haven for bacteria to grow and thrive, so much, so there was a strikingly high number recorded. Up to 75 million cells per square centimetre of a variety of bacteria and fungus. The research had lead to the conclusion that without the carbon produced from the low-quality polymers in the material, this number would have been much less dramatic.

The presence of bacteria is important for the development of a child’s immune system, but too much can lead to infections. The increase of which can be avoided by better quality bath toys that feature higher quality polymers thus preventing the growth and fungus and bacteria.

Tenura Antimicrobial Daily Living Aids

With Tenura for the most part being hand held daily living aids intended for use around food and drink, we too faced similar issues in making sure our products did not subject our users to these risks as well as others.

Initially creating our daily living aids from a non-toxic material, silicone, we removed the need for phthalates to be used in our products to make them pliable enough for their purpose. Phthalates have been used in similar products. It helps to soften cheaper materials to give them a more rubber like finish. The problem with phthalates, is that they are toxic and exposure to them can have long term detrimental health effects. This has resulted in them being banned or restricted in parts of Europe and the USA.

To help combat bacteria the only additive we used is an anti-microbial powder, added during the manufacturing process which prevents the build-up of bacteria and protecting against mould and fungi. This solitary additive is intended to help protect our customers, as well as add value through longevity to our daily living aids.

Gardening Therapy with Tenura

gardening-therapy-with-tenuraSome may find that having a disability can leave you feeling low as you can’t continue with the daily activities like you used to however whilst searching online I fell upon a few facts about gardening therapy. The information I found gave a basis on how gardening can help people with impairments get back into a routine. Tenura offers a wide range of products that can help make it comfortable for you to do these activities again.

Gardening Therapy

Gardening therapy is based around the idea of routine and purpose. Supplying someone living with a disability a reason to get up in the morning creates more positive energy. For those with disabilities it can be a challenge getting back into those daily routines. Gardening gives you a reason to get out of the house as some garden needs daily care. You are getting a natural source of Vitamin D being in the sun, also promoting a better night’s sleep whilst doing light exercise throughout the day. As the days go by you will begin to notice that you are accomplishing more and more felling less down and having more energy.

During my research I also found out that gardening reduces the chances of having a heart attacks and developing diabetes as it promotes healthy living. Without realising it you are doing a few hours of exercise every day and slowly developing muscles that may have caused pain or discomfort. However whilst being outside all day is a positive thing there are some precautions to take; make sure you drink plenty of water, take regular breaks, wear protective clothing, store equipment safely or ensure that it isn’t causing a hazard when in use.

Extreme grip mats

tenura-extremeExtreme grip mats are made from a strong tacky like material which will prevent things from moving. This mat creates a bond to most surfaces; these mats are designed for high movement areas and will adhere to a surface instantly creating a strong non slip surface. These mats are dishwasher safe or can be cleaned with hot soapy water, once fully dry they are ready for usage again without losing any of its adhesive qualities.

This product can be used by those who have balancing issues the following are examples or where to use these products;

  • Whilst filling plant pots up, by placing an extreme mat down you can fill plant pots up without risk of them falling.
  • Placed pots on them when finished to keep them in place in case of knocking.
  • Carrying things on a tray that may be slightly heavier or for those with balancing issues; this mat will keep things in place if you don’t have steady hands.

Non slip fabric

non-slip-fabric-for-gardeningNon slip fabric is a foam based material attached to polyester mesh. It is designed to allow objects to sink into the material preventing all movement. The fabric can be used anywhere in any size. You can cut this fabric down to size with scissors for what purpose it is needed. Similarly to the grip mats they are easy to wash with warm soapy water, once they are fully dry they are ready for use again without losing any of its non slip properties.

  • If you find discomfort whilst kneeling down this fabric is cushioned creating comfort when leaned on, simply lay it down on the ground and fold as many times as needed to create extra comfort.
  • When planting you can place plants on the non slip fabric to keep them in place but without causing any damage to them.

Moulded Cup Holder

moulded-cup-holders-for-gardeningThe Tenura Moulded cup holder is available in red and blue; it has a strong microbial construction which prevents any bacteria or fungi spreading on the material. This product can also be washed with ease either in the dishwasher or with hot soapy water then once fully dried it is ready to use again without losing any of its non slip properties. It works just like a regular coaster but it is fitted to the bottom of your cup for an anti slip base. This product is beneficial for those who have vision impairments due to it being on the bottom of your cup you don’t have the issue of trying to locate your coaster and risk it falling.

  • This product is a good way to place your cup down without risk of it falling or spilling when trying to locate and place it on a regular coaster.
  • You can also apply them to the bottom of small plant pots when either filling, moving/ carrying or when displaying them to prevent movement.

Cup Caps

cupcap-for-gardeningTenura Cup caps are self sealing caps that are made from silicone and are flexible to stretch around the top of a cup or glass preventing spills when shaken or knocked over. This product is perfect for children or those with an unsteady grip protecting clothing or furniture.

Grip Strips and rolls

grip-strips-for-gardeningTenura silicone grip strips and rolls are two different products with similar purpose, the rolls are made from silicone with a self adhesive backing, they can be used as draw liners, shelf liners or tray liners they can be cut to size with ease and once applied they create a non slip base, however we do not recommend using this product again once I removed from the surface as it loses its adhesive quality once removed from the surface. On the other hand the grip strips are made from the same silicone material and are reusable they come in a 2cm x 1m strip that can be used wherever extra grip is needed. Easy to apply, the materials adhesive-like qualities bonds together and stays in place but also easy to remove.

  • Whilst gardening there rolls or strips can be useful if there is extra grip needed;
  • Wrap the strips around any tool or hose pipe to create a anti slip grip
  • Apply the strips to a wheelbarrow to create a stronger grip when lifting it
  • The rolls can be used to line trays, buckets, wheelbarrows to create an anti-slip surface when you are moving around.
