The Best Table Mats of 2022, But Are They Disability-Friendly?
In part one of this blog series, we compared vinyl, wooden, quilted and metal placemats to silicone table mats. This time we are going to review those table mats in terms of the following properties:
- Non-slip
- Antimicrobial
- Machine washable
- Inclusivity for people with disabilities
- Heat resistance
We hope this blog provides you with information to help you make an informed decision on your next table mat purchase.
Vinyl Table Mats Vs Silicone Table Mats
Are Vinyl Placemats Non-Slip?
Vinyl table mats offer non-slip properties, but these pale in comparison to Tenura silicone.
If you knock over drinks on vinyl table mats, they are waterproof, but woven vinyl table mats, which are currently trendy, offer little protection, allowing liquids through the gaps.
Do Vinyl Placemats Have Antimicrobial Properties?
Some vinyl table mats have antimicrobial properties, as do Tenura table mats. The antimicrobial protection ensures bacteria can't harbour.
Can You Machine Wash Vinyl Placemats (Dishwasher Safe)?
Some vinyl table mats aren't machine washable due to their low-temperature resistance, so you may will have to wash them by hand. Tenura table mats can be washed either by hand or in the dishwasher.
Are Vinyl Placemats Suitable for Disabled People?
These table mats are lightweight and easy to take on the go, just like Tenura table mats. Both mats are suitable for use with disabled people who require support at mealtimes.
Are Vinyl Placemats Heat Resistant?
Vinyl mats are heat resistant, usually up to 35.6°C, which is impressive but not as remarkable as the 250°C heat resistance of Tenura table mats. So, be cautious when placing hot plates and pans on vinyl table mats as they may warp or melt.
Quilted Table Mats Vs Silicone Table Mats
Are Quilted Placemats Non-Slip?
Quilted table mats have no fundamental non-slip properties. Some will fare better than others, depending on the quilted table mats material. Still, the fabric will be no comparison to silicone's non-slip qualities.
Do Quilted Placemats Have Antimicrobial Properties?
The vast majority of quilted table mats do not have antimicrobial properties, meaning bacteria can harbour on the material and adversely affect a person's health. Some silicone placemats aren't antimicrobial, but Tenura table mats are.
Can You Machine Wash Quilted Placemats (Dishwasher Safe)?
This type of table mat is often machine washable. However, it depends on the fabric dyes, which could bleed or fade if washed at a high temperature. Tenura table mats are far more convenient to wash, as no matter how many times they go in the dishwasher, they will not fade.
Are Quilted Placemats Suitable for Disabled People?
Quilted table mats are lightweight, and you can take them on the go. However, they have no non-slip properties to reduce the risk of spillages for the disabled. Non-slip table mats such as silicone table mats can offer this assistance.
Are Quilted Placemats Heat Resistant?
These table mats have little heat resistance, contrary to Tenura table mats.
Exposure to high heat or flames can cause quilted table mats to discolour/burn or even set alight. However, some synthetic fabrics, such as nylon or polyester, can be fire-retardant.
Wooden Table Mats Vs Silicone Table Mats
Are Wooden Placemats Non-Slip?
Often not, they are slippy unless a lacquer is applied, impacting the table mat's appearance. Sometimes wooden table mats will have non-slip rubber coasters on the bottom, but this will have little benefit in preventing unwanted movement for objects on top of the table mat. To avoid unwanted movement from items on top of table mats, look for slip-resistant mats like Tenura.
Do Wooden Placemats Have Antimicrobial Properties?
Certain types of wood like pine and oak naturally demonstrate antimicrobial properties, and you can treat certain woods to possess antimicrobial properties.
Bacteria, insects and fungi can affect the wooden table mat's appearance, chemical composition and structure, accelerating degradation. The antimicrobial additive in silicone table mats protects against mould, fungi, and a wide range of bacteria, which is vital as placemats are often close to your food.
Can You Machine Wash Wooden Placemats (Dishwasher Safe)?
It is worth noting that wood can stain, especially when in contact with curry or red wine and sadly, you can't put them in a dishwasher to clean, which may leave you tempted to wash the placemat in hot soapy water is fine. However, leaving it to soak can cause it to swell and lose form, becoming a hazard due to its unlevel misshaped surface. You shouldn’t need to soak your silicone mat. We would instead suggest you put it in a dishwasher.
Are Wooden Placemats Suitable for Disabled People?
This table mat isn't suitable for disabled individuals as they can be heavy, bulky and have no beneficial properties for the disabled. Whereas silicone table mats are anti-slip, flexible and lightweight, making them suitable.
Wooden table mats aren't dishwasher safe, so each table mat would have to be hand washed by the carer rather than putting all silicone mats in a dishwasher, which saves lots of time and effort.
Are Wooden Placemats Heat Resistant?
Wooden tablemats can burn, causing discolouration, and if exposed to a high temperature, you could have a fire on your hands. Tenura silicone is incredibly robust even in extreme temperatures (up to 250°C).
Metal Table Mats Vs Silicone Table Mats
Are Metal Placemats Non-Slip?
If the metal table mat has a pattern etched in its surface, making it tactile, it has better non-slip properties. However, this affects the ability to keep it hygienic.
Tenura silicone provides a brilliant level of non-slip which stops things on its surface from being easily knocked over, helping you avoid spillages.
Do Metal Placemats Have Antimicrobial Properties?
Not all metals are antimicrobial, but silver is an example of a naturally antibacterial metal. The quantities of such metals within the placemat will determine if the placemat is antimicrobial. If unsure, check with the manufacturer. Tenura's silicone mats are antimicrobial, but some of our competitor's silicone mats are not.
Can You Easily Wash Metal Placemats (Dishwasher Safe)?
When handwashing the table mat, you should avoid rough brushes that can leave scrapes and scratches in the metal's finish, where bacteria can harbour. Some metal table mats are just metallic lacquer on top of another material. With harsh cleaning chemicals, these coatings can peel off.
You shouldn't need to use harsh brushes or chemicals on silicone table mats, as you can put them in hot soapy water or a dishwasher. Typically you should avoid placing metal table mats in a dishwasher.
Are Metal Placemats Suitable for Disabled People?
Metal table mats aren't suitable for the disabled as they can be heavy, sharp and tricky to transport, the opposite set of characteristics to Tenura silicone table mats.
Are Metal Placemats Heat Resistant?
Most metals have incredibly high melting points, meaning hot objects such as pots and pans placed on their surface will not deform the metal. Metal is a good conductor, so some metal table mats can get hot if pans are directly placed on their surface. Instead, a silicone table mat may be a more appropriate solution as it has low thermal conductivity and brilliant heat resistance.
To Conclude…
We know that Tenura silicone table mats are a great addition to mealtimes. They can lessen the cleanup time because you reduce the risk of spillages, and you can put them straight in the dishwasher, but let's look at how all the table mats we have reviewed in this blog have fared:
The Best Non-Slip Table Mats Are…
If you are looking for a mat with non-slip qualities, you will want to go with a vinyl, silicone or tactile metal table mat.
The Best Antimicrobial And Machine Washable Table Mats Are…
With the Coronavirus pandemic and health being in the back of everybody's mind, you may be more interested in the antimicrobial properties of your table mats and if they're machine washable. Therefore, silicone table mats are a great choice.
The Most Inclusively Designed Table Mats Are…
Both vinyl and silicone table mats are suitable for use by a disabled person who requires a carer at mealtimes. These table mats reduce the likelihood of spillages, thanks to their non-slip properties. A carer can easily wash them in hot soapy water (or put their Tenura table mats in a dishwasher). These table mats are lightweight, so you can take them out and about.
The Table Mats With The Best Heat Resistance Are…
Vinyl, metal and silicone table mats have heat resistance, some of these materials more so than others. You will need to be the most careful with vinyl as they have the lowest heat resistance (up to 35.6°C), then silicone (up to 250°C), followed by metal. Most metals can withstand temperatures of 500°C. But in your kitchen, you aren't dealing with temperatures over 230°C. It is important to note that metal placemats can conduct heat and will be hot to the touch if you place hot pans on their surface.
Please read part one of this blog series if you want to know more about the above placemats regarding their toxicity, environmental impact, price, and durability.

Being Disability Friendly As An Individual Or Company
We are glad you are contemplating how you can be more disability-friendly. Combatting discrimination and being disability-friendly are two ways individuals and companies can be accessible and inclusive to the disabled community. In this blog are Tenura's top tips.
What Can I Do To Support Disabled People?
Educate Yourself On Disabilities
It's crucial to be educated on this important topic as it improves your etiquette and terminology, giving you a deeper understanding of the common challenges a disabled person can face.
Use The Correct Grammar
Times change and terminology changes too, so please avoid outdated derogatory language. We suggest you use the term disabled or refer to the person's actual disability, for instance, deaf, but only if required in the conversation.
Donate Time To Charities
You can positively impact charities that support the disabled. There are many exciting avenues to explore, including training a service dog, lending a few hours a week to your local charity shop, and donating items that are no longer required.
Fundraising
You could do a fundraiser to raise money for a particular charity you feel is deserving. Bake-sales, coffee mornings and charity fun runs are always a favourite.
Providing Help For Disabled People
Act, but do so respectfully, recognising a disabled person's independence and avoiding condescending behaviours.
Stand Up Against Discrimination
Some people may feel compelled to speak out against prejudice and steward disability rights. A good understanding of disabilities can allow you to do this in a selfless, wholehearted way but avoid being patronising.
Keep The Conversation Going
Participate in observance days to help spread awareness about disabled causes, conditions, and other things you feel need a light shining upon them in the disabled community. You can actively support the disabled community by sharing information and spreading knowledge.
Support Following The Coronavirus, Reach Out And Listen
Coronavirus has shaken the world in many ways, especially for the disabled community. In our blog inspired by last years theme ('Fighting for rights in the post-COVID era.') of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we delved into the statistics. We addressed helpful ways to support disabled people with their post-COVID worries. Their main concerns included mental health, access to healthcare, shops and transport, and you can read how to make a positive impact via our blog.
The Facts Regarding Disabled People in the Workplace
Get a better understanding of disability employment within the UK with these facts.
- Disabled people are over a third less likely to be employed compared to non-disabled people. (Parliament)
- With one in six of the population living with a health condition or impairment, employers are missing out on a huge number of talented people. (Scope)
- Disabled people were 60% more likely to lose their job during the pandemic (Learning Disabilities Today)
- More people are reporting a long-term health condition or disability than did so eight years ago. The increasing number of people reporting a disability is being largely driven by an increase in mental health conditions (gov.uk)
We hope these facts have been an eye-opener and will encourage you to take up some of the guidance below.
What Can My Company Do To Support Disabled People?
Make A Public Statement Of Support
The statement lets your customers and potential prospects see the human side of your company and get a better understanding of your brands values. If you support equality for the disabled, let it be heard, and let other companies follow in your lead. You could release something less formal, in the form of a blog post, like the one you are reading now.
Make Sure Employees Within Your Organisation Do Not Discriminate
To prevent such issues, provide a training course or host a meeting complete with relevant educational information. Having a well-informed workforce gives employees the fundamentals necessary to be stewards in events of discrimination within the workplace.
Improve Accessibility Around The Company Building
This means providing a mobility ramp in place of steps to aid those who struggle climbing stairs. Another improvement you can make is to change ordinary doors to automated doors. Automated doors also tend to be wider than a typical door which means the door is wide enough for wheelchair access.
Ensure there is good lighting through the building for anyone who is partially sighted. Other changes you can make include making sure the bathroom is accessible and having modified furniture to aid in mobility and comfort.
Reevaluate And Strengthen Company Discrimination Policies And Keep Them Up-to-date
When amendments are made, inform the employees to follow your latest practices. Enlist an independent adjudicator to access the inclusivity of your company. They can provide a non-biased opinion and their experience and knowledge to further aid in your journey to improving your work environment for the disabled.
Increase Diversity And Enrol On The Disability Confident Scheme
It is a brilliant voluntary Government scheme that encourages the recruitment and retainment of disabled people in the workplace. It promotes increased employee diversity, creating a broadened idea pool. Almost 20,000 employers have signed up for the Disability Confident Scheme.
Participate In Purple Tuesday
At Tenura, we strive towards making our customer service accessible for the disabled community. We would applaud you to do the same. It makes you reevaluate the current structure and adapt it to be inclusive. You can read more about Tenura's efforts in our Purple Tuesday Awareness Day blog.
Record Disability-Related Absences Separate To Sick Leave
To help those with disabilities attend appointments and seek adequate care, record their disability-related absence separate to sick leave, stopping them from being penalised for taking care of their health.
Product To Help People With Disabilities At Work
Grip Roll
You can improve a person's grip on many items in and around the office. For instance, you can wrap Tenura silicone grip roll around grab rails in the toilets, and you can cover the pens handle pens to help the person grasp the item and write. You can also wrap the silicone grip roll to cupboard handles to improve the person's ability to open them independently, thanks to the additional grip the silicone provides.
Cutlery grips
You can slip Tenura cutlery grips onto cutlery handles, giving the user a better grip on the cutlery, thanks to the increased handle size.
If someone is struggling to write information down due to their lack of grip strength or dexterity, consider investing in Tenura cutlery grips. The grips slip onto pens, allowing the user to write with ease and comfort as less hand mobility is required to grasp the pen.
Non-slip Fabric
You can cut Tenura non-slip fabric down to a suitable size, placing it under the computer keyboard to prevent any unwanted movement keeping the keyboard in an accessible and comfortable position for the user.
Anti-slip drink coasters
We all spill drinks, and some conditions can make a person more prone to doing so, but you can be a supportive employer by having Tenura anti-slip drinks coasters available to staff. These coasters are great, as they keep drinks that rest on their surface secure thanks to the non-slip properties of the silicone mat.
Floor mat
If a person struggles to get on and off their chair, they may require more grip underfoot, and investing in Tenura non-slip floor mats may be a great way to provide the necessary help without the need for more permanent solutions like grab rails.
Thank you for taking the time to read the blog. We hope you have found valuable ways to help the disabled community in your everyday life and at work. If you have any further advice you feel our readers could benefit from, please let us know via our socials, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
How to Choose the Right Placemats? & The Benefits of Table Mats
When shopping for placemats, there are so many on the market, which can make your choice tricky. It isn’t always obvious which placemats are best. The material of the placemat has a significant effect on the quality and other attributes.
In this blog, we are comparing four types of placemats; vinyl, quilted, wooden and metal to Tenura silicone table mats, in terms of the following qualities:
- Aesthetics
- Toxicity
- Environmental impact
- Price
- Durability
We hope this blog gives you some good advice and direction to help you find a placemat that meets your specific requirements.
Vinyl Placemats Vs Silicone Placemats
Do Vinyl Table Mats Have Many Design Variations/Are Vinyl Table Mats on Trend?
Vinyl placemats come in many colours and shapes and can be produced on a mass scale. You can print on vinyl placemats which opens up even more design avenues.
Similar to vinyl placemats, silicone placemats can be moulded into many shapes in a variety of colours. At Tenura, we offer three bold colours of silicone placemat (red, blue and yellow).
Are Vinyl Table Mats Toxic?
Vinyl placemats are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which gives vinyl placemat heat resistance, flexibility and durability. However, PVC is thought to leach harmful substances like phthalates and dioxin (one of the most toxic, highly polluting chemicals ever produced). In contrast, Tenura placemats contain no phthalates or cost-saving chemicals, making them non-toxic.
What Environmental Impact do Vinyl Table Mats Have?
Making vinyl and silicone involves petroleum extraction from a non-renewable resource, crude oil, followed by a refining process requiring extensive energy and heat.
Vinyl is mass-produced but not readily recyclable, therefore taking up significant landfill space. Silicone doesn’t decompose like vinyl placemats into microplastics that are dangerous if ingested by wildlife. Silicone is a safer and more sensible alternative to plastic placemats such as vinyl, especially for the environment.
How Much do Vinyl Table Mats Cost?
The brand name has the most significant influence on vinyl placemat’s price, whereas the cost of silicone placemats is dependent on quality. Tenura placemats are a premium silicone construction that boasts many benefits, including being antimicrobial and heat resistant (up to 250°C).
How Long will Vinyl Table Mats Last?
Vinyl placemats are reparable using patches from hardware stores, but consumers aren’t unlikely to mend their placemats. Vinyl placemats can be durable, but out of vinyl and silicone placemats, silicone is a better choice in terms of its durability. Silicone is incredibly resilient even at extreme temperatures. This durability makes silicone placemats last for years.
Quilted Placemats Vs Silicone Placemats
Do Quilted Table Mats Have Many Design Variations/Are Quilted Table Mats Trendy?
Most variations of this placemat are down to the fabric, which can be plain, patterned, or textured. They are considered old fashioned and are more likely to be in homes of older generations. They are very different in finish to silicone placemats, which are often smooth and glossy.
Are Quilted Table Mats Toxic?
Providing the fabric used to create the quilted placemat is natural. It should be plastic-free, so just like Tenura silicone placemats, it doesn’t contain phthalates plasticisers. It could, however, contain cost-saving chemical dyes that can cause skin irritation. At Tenura, we strive for our products to be premium which means we use no cost-saving chemicals in production, making our placemats non-toxic.
What Environmental Impact do Quilted Table Mats Have?
Waste products such as harmful chemicals and carbon emissions from the production of synthetic fabric contribute to global warming.
Wool can and should be recycled. Synthetic fabrics are harder to recycle and often end up in landfill sites. Silicone can be recycled by taking it to specialised recycling centres.
How Much do Quilted Table Mats Cost?
Sometimes they are double-sided, so you get two quilted placemat designs for the price of one. They are relatively inexpensive, especially those made of synthetic materials, due to them being cheaper and easier to produce on a large scale.
Silicone can also be mass-produced, making it an accessible price point for environmentally conscious manufacturers such as Tenura, who want to create plastic-free products. Silicone products tend to be slightly higher in cost to the consumer than plastic alternatives; however, they will last longer as they do not degrade. Therefore, the impressive properties of silicone placemats will remain intact.
How Long will Quilted Table Mats Last?
In a shorter time, quilted placemats are more likely to stain and look dishevelled. You can wash them at a low temperature, which helps retain their aesthetic appeal but follow the fabric guidelines to avoid fading and shrinking the fabric.
Synthetic fabrics are more durable than natural ones, but stitching can still come away with wear, and fading will occur. Synthetic fabrics typically have higher heat resistance and can be machine washed for ease. Silicone mats are good to use again once dry after cleaning them with warm soapy water.
Wooden Placemats Vs Silicone Placemats
Do Wooden Table Mats Have Many Design Variations/Are Wooden Table Mats Trendy?
Due to wood’s solid composition, these placemats can have 3D effects or laser cut designs, increasing their variety. It’s on-trend and can match many aesthetics within the home.
Silicone placemats can also be laser cut and poured into a variety of moulds to make intriguing shapes. Tenura placemats, on the other hand, are simplistic by design and meet specific objectives, like being non-slip and heat resistant.
Are Wooden Table Mats Toxic?
Wood with any defects, including toxicity and disease, will not be used to create placemats. They could be dangerous to health, especially when they come so close to food.
Tenura placemats are made of food-grade silicone and are completely non-toxic.
What Environmental Impact do Wooden Table Mats Have?
Wooden placemats are one of the most environmentally friendly placemats. They are procured from trees (a natural renewable source) and can decompose in a relatively short timescale. Trees also reduce CO2 in the air, with CO2 being a pollutant that speeds up global warming. I’ve restored this, as it was fine.
Tenura’s non-slip and heat resistance qualities will last years simply by washing your mat with warm, soap water between each use. Without additional and potentially time consuming maintenance, your wooden placemat will degrade and require replacing quicker than a Tenura placemat.
How Much do Wooden Table Mats Cost?
We have seen a price increase in recent years for pine, oak and other cool-toned woods, whereas, in the past, mahogany was in vogue. The type and age of the wood can vastly affect the price, but they are at an accessible price point for the most part.
As you may have seen on the high street or online, silicone is trendy, especially in terms of bakeware - this is thanks to silicone’s impressive robustness and machine washable convenience.
How Long will Wooden Table Mats Last?
The durability of wooden placemats is high if it’s formed from mid-range wood and you follow the care instructions.
Because silicone is so durable and built to last, you likely won’t need to purchase any other placemat in your lifetime, whereas you might need to replace your wooden placemat in 5 to 10 years.
Metal Placemats Vs Silicone Placemats
Do Metal Table Mats Have Many Design Variations/Are Metal Table Mats Trendy?
Metal placemats are very up and coming as they tend to signify elegance and style. You can have laser cut designs and different finishes. Similar to silicone, the molten liquid is poured into different shapes to create showstopper table décor.
Are Metal Table Mats Toxic?
The vast majority on the market are safe, especially if you have bought them from a reputable retailer that stocks products that meet UK regulations. Nevertheless, you need to keep them away from harsh chemicals as the metal may not be chemically inert like Tenura placemats.
What Environmental Impact do Metal Table Mats Have?
Metals are widely recyclable, which conserves natural metal resources. Recycling metals is far more eco-friendly and less polluting than making new metal from ore. Ore is increasing in scarcity.
Less environmentally friendly metals such as copper and rose gold require high heat and specialised machinery to manipulate. Copper is also toxic and can have adverse effects on marine life and waterways, whereas silicone is non-toxic and will not affect these ecosystems.
How Much do Metal Table Mats Cost?
Metal placemats have a higher price tag due to the metal’s value and specialised machinery such as large high-pressure presses used to manipulate the material into shape.
A cheaper alternative to 100% metal placemats is metal-coated placemats. However, the coating can wear away with time, especially if you don’t follow the product’s care instructions.
Tenura placemats are the middle ground in price between these two metal placemats.
How Long will Metal Table Mats Last?
Metal placemats should have a long product life as they are made of durable material, just like Tenura silicone table mats. However, metal mats will require more care and maintenance than Tenura mats.
To Conclude…
Here at Tenura, we are a bit biased towards Tenura placemats. Still, we recognise that all placemats have a purpose, which is why we have broken down our conclusion by category.
The best aesthetically appealing placemats are…
Are you someone who likes to be on-trend? Perhaps you’ll opt for wooden, vinyl, silicone or metal placemats.
The best non-toxic placemats are…
All placemats in this blog, bar the vinyl placemats, are non-toxic. Remember that the metal and quilted placemats can be toxic depending on the dyes or metal used.
The cheapest, most durable placemats are…
If you are frugal with your money, then price and durability may be the most attractive attributes. Based on our findings, vinyl, wooden, and silicone placemats are the best.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021 & Discount Code
1992 is when the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was announced and held every year after on the 3rd of December. United Nations lead this observance day and hope those contributing do so in celebration through learning and action. In this blog, we will discuss ways to join in the celebrations in a COVID friendly way.
A Reflection on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2020
Last years theme was an important one and something many of us hadn't cast much thought upon, "Not All Disabilities Are Visible". The theme made people worldwide re-evaluate the stereotypes that stem from the term disabled. Thanks to this campaign, autism, hearing impairments or conditions that affect the brain, neurological system, and mental health became widely recognised in terms of disability.
What is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities Theme 2021
We are happy the Coronavirus pandemic is levelling out to a form of normalcy. With this year's theme at the forefront of our minds, 'Fighting for rights in the post-COVID era." We can take a deep look into supporting disabled people following the global pandemic.
How Can We Help the Disabled In This Post COVID World
To best understand how we can support those with disabilities, we have taken a look at the Government's statistics regarding the disabled and how they feel post-COVID.
Mental Health and the Disabled Post COVID
People with disabilities have stated that their mental health has been negatively affected by Coronavirus, and they are having feelings of anxiety, boredom, stress and loneliness. Almost half of the disabled population reported feeling lonely as an effect of the pandemic, which is significant.
So how can we help? A great way to combat many of the above feelings is by talking about them to others. Some great listeners and advice-givers include family members, friends or professionals. Verbalising problems decreases stress levels and opens up the room for conversation and discussion, relieving anxiety and stress.
24% of UK disabled people stated they hadn't spoken to anyone about their worries.
Healthcare and the Disabled Post COVID
40% of disabled people have stated that access to healthcare for non-Coronavirus related issues has been affected. It's an ambiguous statement, covering many areas from travel to treatment by healthcare professions at hospitals and GP practices.
So how can we help? If you are a healthcare professional, make sure you positively impact any patient and provide the correct information to allow the individual to seek proper treatment. For anyone who has a disabled relative or friend, make sure they have access to transport and can make their appointments. There are online portals to order online prescriptions, so helping them set up an account can give the disabled person a means of acquiring medication without mobility barriers.
Shopping and the Disabled Post COVID
It is our fundamental human right to have access to water, food and other essentials, and this is an area some people with disabilities are finding tricky. 27% of disabled people have stated that having access to groceries, medications, and other essentials have been affected by the Coronavirus.
So how can we help? When shopping and being generally out and about, be mindful of others, keep your 2m distance to make others feel safe in the store. If you have a disabled friend or relative, ask if they need any assistance. If they do not feel comfortable leaving the house, create an online groceries order or help them order goods online. Assess where the disabled person needs additional help and find ways to make this practical and safe.
Coronavirus has affected us all but has taken a toll on some of society more so than others. We need to come together as we did for the NHS and make sure that we as a community are inclusive and accessible to all people no matter their circumstances.
Many products on the market can improve the lives of those with disabilities. At Tenura, we have a range of disability aids that can help in all areas of life. We are offering you a 10% discount to support the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021.

Purple Tuesday 2021 & 10% Discount on Tenura Disability Aids
Some companies are taking up the Purple Tuesday initiative to make their company values align with the disabled community. This blog will outline how you can get involved and what Tenura is doing to ensure we provide inclusive customer service.
So, What’s Purple Tuesday All About
Fourteen million people in the UK live with a disability, equating to roughly 22% of the population. With that many people classified as having some form of disability, you’d think we would have better infrastructure as a nation to cope with the challenges the disabled community face.
We are excited to be taking part this year and joining in with over 5,000 organisations, pledging towards the Purple Tuesday campaign. Each organisation reflects inward to evaluate their customer service to make it a better experience for the disabled.
How Technology and Companies can Help
As technology and our understanding of disabilities continues to grow, the future for inclusivity is bright, which is precisely what Purple Tuesday is all about.
The technology push towards a more accessible customer experience is essential. It can start with ideas such as website accessibility, voice recognition devices, and providing different channels disabled customers can access your services. Companies coming up with technology advancements in the name of disability inclusion are fantastic, as all these changes can vastly improve a disabled person’s experience with your company.
Companies can make changes offline too, which includes; training staff helping them to communicate with disabled people, installing wheelchair ramps, and creating clear signage.
If you are a company that wants to join in on the Purple Tuesday campaign, you can via their website, you need to register, then pledge a commitment that will benefit disabled people using your company. Put your ideas into action and deliver on your goals, so you can celebrate your achievements when it comes to 2nd November.
How You Can Help
Those of you speaking out on social media, informing others about businesses stepping in the right direction and making those positive-discrimination steps is impactful. Helping companies recognise ways they can improve accessibility helps create the market pull, pulling companies in line with the values of the disabled community and beyond.
You can use the following hashtags to join in on the conversation:

Tenura’s Pledge to Purple Tuesday
We aim to provide a better user experience for disabled people using the Tenura website. We want to be inclusive, and with products aimed at those who are disabled, it seems like a step in the right direction.
One step we have taken to reach our goal of a more inclusive website is a website audit. The website audit picks up areas where we can make our website accessible. We will be implementing these ideas in the coming years, as we have big plans, ranging from image naming formulas that aid those using screen readers to releasing a guide on website accessibility in the form of a blog. We started our strategy last year and have been making small manageable steps towards our goal ever since. As I am sure you appreciate, these adaptations take both time and money.
To further help us towards our website accessibility goal, please send an email informing us of any website accessibility techniques you feel we could implement.
We want to show our appreciation to the community pledging towards a better future by offering you a 10% discount on all Tenura products via our website. Use the discount code PURPLETUES10 at checkout to redeem.
This promotion is running from 26/10/21 to 16/11/21.
Let’s make Halloween Accessible for the Disabled
We don’t want anyone left out of Halloween celebrations, so we are continually developing new innovative ways to make Halloween accessible for all. Read on to get some great ideas and find products that can help bring the experience to life.
Some simple swaps can make Halloween more accessible.
Swap Face Masks for Face Paint
Instead of using masks as a part of the fancy dress experience, use face paint.
For visually impaired children, masks can hinder their sight, and for children who rely on lip-reading, masks can obstruct a person’s mouth. Children with autism sometimes have sensory sensitivities, and masks could be too intensely stimulating.
The best alternative is face paint, as you can adapt the design to be more inclusive and suitable for various conditions and disabilities.
Trick or Treating
If you plan on venturing outside, make sure you have the relevant mobility aids for children, making the experience as comfortable as possible.
Youngsters who use a wheelchair and need help manoeuvring in and out of it can use non-slip floor mats. Floor mats can give the child the support and grip required to manoeuvre into their wheelchair. Whilst out and about, feet don’t always stay on the wheelchair footrest, but having grip roll that’s stuck to the footplate prevents feet from slipping off, avoiding injury and maintaining comfort.
A trial run of the trick or treat route you will take, completed a day before, can help reassure children.
Adults and children alike can have allergies. One of the most common is a nut allergy, so make sure you stock a variety of treats that all children can enjoy, which avoids children feeling left out and prevents them from consuming foods that cause an allergic reaction.
Sometimes drinks are given out as all the candy has run out, or the child requires a drink at the end of trick or treating. Either way, you may need a bottle opener. At Tenura, we have a grip-enhancing bottle opener that helps you open bottles with more comfort and grip.
Rather than going outside and trick or treating, you can hide the treats around the house as a treasure hunt. You can place them in areas you know are manageable for children at the party.
Prevent Spillages
Some children have trouble with their hand-eye coordination. But placing sweet bowls and drinks on anti-slip table mats and drinks coasters can prevent spillages. They are brightly coloured, so easy to see. Tenura mats are also easy to wipe down and protect furniture from stains.
It may be a good idea to take a drink out with you whilst you trick or treat, and a Tenura silicone CupCap drinks cover can make any drinks container spill-proof.
Pumpkin Carving
Carving pumpkins is a staple of Halloween, but it can be dangerous. By sliding Tenura children’s cutlery grips onto the carving knife, the child’s grip is maintained on the knife’s handle, making the knife less likely to slip out of their hand. Children’s cutlery grips make handles larger and easier to hold. Some children have difficulty grasping thin handles, so this is a perfect way to make pumpkin carving accessible.
To prevent the pumpkin from moving whilst you carve, you can place it on a Tenura anti-slip table mat.
If your child cannot participate in pumpkin carving, consider sticking items such as colourful pom-poms, fluffy pipe cleaners, and googly eyes to the pumpkin instead, which significantly reduces any risks involved.
Mark Your Home
Let others know that people in the home have conditions that require patience and understanding. You can do this by placing a sign visible to those coming up your driveway. Parents can read the sign and educate their children before approaching the door.
We hope these tips and tricks have given you some inspiration to make Halloween more accessible for various disabilities. If you have any other ideas you would like to share, let us know via our social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram).
Happy Halloween!
World OT Day 2021 + Free Occupational Therapy Gift
Initially, this observance day was known as WFOT Occupational Therapy International Day, until 2010 when it was renamed Occupation Therapy Day/World OT Day. The observation day became official and globally recognised in 2010.
The organisation behind OT day is the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, WFOT, which provides a supportive community for occupational therapists globally with over 100 organisations and 580,000 occupational therapists in their membership program. Their key goals are to provide a "global voice for occupational therapists" and "set the standards" for OT practices. They want to educate their members with the latest industry news and techniques, delivering this via their approved education programmes.
The World Federation of Occupational Therapists is pushing the focus this year on displaced persons and marginalised communities and how best to support them as occupational therapists.
This crucial topic is at the forefront of people's minds following shifts in the socioenvironmental climate following the recent events and those seeking refuge from Afghanistan.
World OT Day 2021 Theme
This year's World OT Day theme is "Belong. Be you.", which lends itself to their latest initiative. They are releasing content regarding diversity, adversity and inclusion, and how we can work together to improve community relations and resilience. We all come across struggles in daily life. Some people in our local and global communities have a more challenging time overcoming adversity, recently highlighted by the Black Lives Matter movement and the scenes in Kabul following the evacuation of troops in Afghanistan.
For some readers, you may be unaware of the essential work that occupational therapists do, especially concerning the above. Still, this blog will demonstrate how vital their role is in our communities and why we need to show our support.
Occupational therapists can help those living in crisis or transitioning to a new location after seeking asylum. They can utilise socio-political occupational therapy techniques to help patients further. They can help by giving a person structure to their daily lives to provide a sense of normalcy. Their work improves the patient's mental health and integration into their new local communities. Integration is paramount and can be acquired through education and bridging the gap between cultural differences. These techniques aim to develop the patient's independence.
As you can imagine, moving to a new area or even country, things can vary, from the types of food to the typical clothing fashions. It was not a choice for displaced humans to move, and the migration was involuntary or even coerced. These people could be fleeing persecution, war/conflict and violations of their human rights. So, understanding culture is beneficial for all parties involved, especially as there may be a language barrier in the initial move.
If you are an OT and want to improve your knowledge surrounding this years theme, there are two free courses available from the World Federation of Occupational Therapists website:
- WFOT Disaster Management for Occupational Therapists
- Occupational Therapy: Working with Displaced Persons

Global Arthritis Day 2021 & Free Arthritis Aid with Purchase
This year Global Arthritis Day will be held on the 12th of October. There are many global awareness days, which are vital, as they bring important topics to the forefront of people's minds. The Arthritis Foundation organises this awareness day, and you can join in on the action by using the hashtag #CureArthritisWAD.
Let's explore some interesting facts and other ways you can be involved in Global Arthritis Day 2021…
Interesting Origin Facts of Arthritis
It might be interesting for you to learn that the word arthritis comes from the Greek language. The word 'arthro' means joints, and 'itis' means inflamed. Inflamed joints is one of the main symptoms of Arthritis. often those with arthritis feel pain in affected areas, see reddening skin, and find their muscles feel tired/weak.
The earliest records of arthritis being present in humans' dates back to 4500 BC.
Who is Affected by Arthritis?
In the UK, over ten million people live with arthritis or equivalent condition, of which 400,000 have rheumatoid arthritis, the second most prevalent type of arthritis, the first being osteoarthritis, which affects approximately 8.5 million people. There are over one hundred types of arthritis worldwide.
Another fact that will shock you is that women are three times more likely to contract arthritis than men. The reason is that women's bones can move around more. Women have relaxed, natural bone positioning and a smooth, skeletal system that allows for more flexibility, but if a movement is performed incorrectly, it can lead to significant injury.
Men have bones coarse in texture and more defined muscle attachment. These two characteristics allow muscle connective tissue, tendons and ligaments to attach better to the bone, creating stronger supporting muscles that prevent improper movement in the joints. Women also experience bone density loss during menopause which can impact the development of arthritis.
Most types of arthritis begin in a person's late 40s to early 50s. However, children can get forms of arthritis, and the term for this is juvenile arthritis. They will likely be given casts/splints to help with movements and for support. 27,000 people under the age of 25 have arthritis in the UK, and of those, 12,000 are children.
Getting Treatment for Arthritis
As there is no known cure for arthritis, many treatments focus on reducing the pain the person experiences. Often you will be referred to a specialist in physiotherapy who can help combat the pain associated with arthritis.
Physiotherapists can demonstrate posture improvements to their patient's and ways tskeleto move and maintain healthy joints to prevent further injury to the affected area. To help maintain activity levels, improve joint strength and motion, they can set goals to help you stay as active as possible. Physiotherapists can also develop a personalised plan of pain-free exercises. If you do have any questions regarding your condition, they are full of advice surrounding arthritis.
In conjunction with joint exercises, physiotherapists use pain relief treatments. Such techniques include massages, acupuncture, or thermotherapy methods. Thermotherapy uses temperature to improve blood circulation, tissue metabolism and elasticity.
To get this professional help for your arthritis, or if you suspect you have arthritis, you will first likely need to visit your GP, and they can refer you to a specialist. You can source a private physiotherapist through research online and a self-referral.
World Arthritis Day Themes
For the past four years, Global Arthritis Day's have had themes. It started in 2017 with the theme, "Don't Delay, Connect Today." This concept focused on accessibility to treatments for those with arthritis and emphasised the importance of early diagnosis. Spreading awareness of the symptoms can give a person the confidence to self-diagnose and seek a GP's advice.
Following this, in 2018, the theme for World Arthritis Day was "It's in your hands, take action.", which highlighted that healthcare is available for those living with arthritis and is more accessible thanks to last years WAD efforts. People need to visit their GP when symptoms occur for early diagnosis and treatments. Going untreated can cause further damage to the affected joints.
2019 and 2020 brought us the "Time2Work" theme, which emphasises company accessibility for people with arthritis. It also helped employers recognise ways to make workplaces more accessible and gave advice for employees on returning to work following rehabilitation.
2021's theme is not yet released, but we will update you via our socials as soon as more information becomes available, so be sure you follow us on one of the following platforms, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
Those living with arthritis have the opportunity to aid medical research teams in discovering new drug treatments and be a part of changing laws and other legislation regarding arthritis, making things more accessible and less discriminatory. This can be done by enrolling on the Time2Research campaign, which runs all year-round.

Arthritis Aids & Your Free Gift
At Tenura, we have some brilliant arthritis aids that help those with arthritic hands perform daily tasks like opening bottles or turning taps. For help with these tasks, you may require a Tenura bottle opener. For larger containers such as jars or cleaning products, you may need a Tenura jar opener.
Tenura bottle and jar openers have many great benefits for people with arthritis and can be especially helpful in the following areas:
- Less muscle and grip strength is required to open twist-top containers when using a Tenura jar or bottle opener.
- Each bottle/jar opener can provide extra grip on other items around the home or workplace, such as taps, doorknobs and cupboard handles.
- Useful for people with arthritis or any condition that weakens hand grip as bottle openers/jar openers reduce the grip strength required to complete the same task, making it a more manageable and comfortable experience.
- You can use bottle openers in environments where a high hygiene standard must be maintained, which is vital for those who have had surgery for arthritis or have exposed skin from irritation and itching, symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

IADLs: Instrumental Activities of Daily Living & Helpful Products
In our previous blog, we explored Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Today we are looking at Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs).
What does IADL mean?
Instrumental activities of daily living, IADLs, are tasks we perform each day that keep our bodies healthy, allowing us to live independently and as active community members. Both mental and physical health factors impact these complex tasks involved in our day-to-day lives.
What are the 7 IADLS?
The seven IADLs are practised by most physiotherapists and occupational therapists, helping determine the level of care their patient requires and any assistive products that could help the patient during the completion of their IADLs.
Due to illness, surgery or disability, some patients may need more help in an area than others, so it is essential to review each patient individually. The seven IADLs and some helpful products:
1. Communication
In our homes, we constantly communicate with one another and the outside world through channels such as mail, emails and phone calls. Being able to stay in touch with others is essential to daily life. It allows you to pay the bills and let others know how you are doing. It's great to stay in touch with people, providing the feeling of connection and companionship.
Many older adults, especially since lockdown, have been alone for a significant length of time, and a little phone call can be the highlight of their day. The older generation hates to feel like a burden, and sometimes they can avoid reaching out, even when they need it the most.
Handling mail poses difficulties, from confusing forms to tiny text. Older adults may find writing tricky and require a writing aid. At Tenura, we have cutlery grips that slide onto pens increasing the handle's grip, comfort and width. A thicker pen means less dexterity is required to hold it.
2. Transportation
We have to leave the house for many reasons like getting fresh air, going shopping or meeting up with friends. Navigating outside the house can be daunting for those with mobility impairments due to the potential risk of slip and fall accidents. Building up confidence with a walking aid could reassure the user to once again go outside independently.
Walking aids such as Zimmer frames can be further adapted to meet a person's specific needs. For example, wrapping Tenura grip strips around the handle improves grip and hold, perfect for those lacking grip strength.
For some, a wheelchair is a more appropriate mobility aid. To get in and out of the wheelchair independently, walking aids can be a great help, along with a Tenura non-slip floor mat. By having a good foothold, you can move more easily without the risks. Tenura silicone floor mat has adhesive like qualities, giving you a secure footing as the mat won't slide out from under your feet.
For some, a guide dog or other assistance animal is required or help them navigate. You will need to talk to a specialist charity to access this type of assistance.
3. Cooking/Feeding
Cooking involves many risks and challenges, especially if the person has a disability that affects their use of cooking equipment.
Tenura sells silicone grip roll, which is grip-enhancive, increasing a person's ability to hold onto knives and other larger utensils.
Knives are often heavily used in a kitchen for food prep, and good, comfortable grip is vital. Keeping cutting knives sharp is also important, as a dull knife can lead to a lack of control. Using Tenura grip strips or grip roll on the handle of a knife when cutting with or sharpening knives can help reduce the likelihood of accidents and injury. A Tenura anti-slip mat can be placed under chopping boards to increase grip with the surface and further prevent slips.
Tenura anti-slip mats create a non-slip surface for plates and bowls to rest when spreading or mixing. A non-slip surface allows you to perform these function with more control and less risk of spills or injury. Tenura anti-slip mats are particularly useful if you only have the use of one hand or arm, as it will hold plates and bowls in place for you.
You can wrap Tenura grip roll around panhandles as it's heat resistant (up to 250°C), stopping hands from getting burnt during the cooking process.
Feeding can be a struggle for people with conditions such as arthritis or Parkinson's due to weakened grip or hand tremors, but using Tenura cutlery grips can add comfort due to the increased handle's width that makes cutlery easier to hold. Cutlery grips can slide onto many kitchen utensils to improve grip. For any utensils too large to fit, wrap Tenura silicone grip roll around the handle instead.
Tenura sells silicone grip roll, which is grip-enhancive, increasing a person's ability to hold onto knives and other larger utensils. You can wrap Tenura grip roll around panhandles as it's heat resistant (up to 250°C), stopping hands from getting burnt during the cooking process.
Opening jars and containers can be tricky too. We have all found jars tough to open, but you can use a Tenura jar opener to enhance grip on jar lids and other large containers with a twist-off cap. They reduce the amount of force necessary, which puts less strain on muscles and joints.
4. Shopping
Shopping involves the IADL, transportation, as people need to get to the shops, such as supermarkets or pharmacies. Of course, they could shop online, which has its own set of difficulties, from computer literacy to website accessibility.
Going shopping requires many skills, such as writing shopping lists, budgeting, self-control and forethought. Mobility, another IADL, has a key role in this activity as mobility around shops is crucial.
You can adapt your mobility aids to make them more comfortable. Wheelchair users can line the wheelchair's footrest to stop feet from sliding off. Cut Tenura silicone grip roll to a suitable size, peel away the backing and apply it to the footrest for improved grip. If you have a wheelchair with a shelf, you can line it with Tenura grip roll, which means your shopping will remain in place and won't slide around, thanks to silicone's gripping properties.
Writing shopping lists can also be beneficial, as it keeps things organised and helps you budget.
5. Housework
Many jobs fall under the umbrella term of housework, including cleaning the bathroom, dusting and hoovering, folding clothes, and putting them away. Each of these tasks requires different movements and actions.
Mobility issues can prevent someone from completing housework, as tasks are no longer manageable with their condition. Avoiding housework creates many problems. The house can fall into disarray, becoming a health risk and negatively affect mental health.
Those with limited mobility may find one or more of these daily activities tricky, but carers or products can help. A person can use non-slip mats to remain organised. You can apply Tenura Extreme mats to walls and stick dry objects such as keys or kitchen utensils to their surface, making them highly visible. There are two colours available; clear and green. We suggest using the green Tenura Extreme mat as a visual aid to make belongings stand out for someone with a visual impairment.
Some jobs require heavy lifting, such as taking rubbish outside. Other tasks require a mechanical or electrical engineer, meaning a professional needs to be called, which plays into the IADL, communication.
6. Medications
Those who require assistance with their instrumental activities of daily living sometimes have a condition that requires medication. Being able to self-medicate, following the directions of your doctors is essential. Overdosing or forgetting to take your medication runs serious risks.
Some products can help, such as alarms and daily pillboxes. But certain people, such as those with dementia, can forget to take their pills entirely and will only be confused by the alarm or box. They will require a carer who can keep track of their intake.
At Tenura, we sell bottle openers that are grip-enhancing, so if it's the child lock/lack of grip that is stopping them from managing their medication, this nifty gadget could be a good investment.
Contacting and communicating symptoms with doctors is essential for prescribing correct medications. Notebooks can help record new symptoms, dosage, and expiration dates and can be a great tool to help with diagnosis and future prescriptions.
7. Finances
Writing shopping lists, putting aside savings, and budgeting properly is an important life skill. Some people need help in this area as having a lack of control over your finances considerably strains mental health.
Finance plays into another IADL, communication. Bills and spam can come through the post, and it can be challenging to distinguish between the two, especially for vulnerable people, who are more susceptible to scammer's tricks. It may be worthwhile a carer checking over the persons mail prior.
Some people are forgetful, so setting up direct debits circumvents issues. Online banking allows individuals to access banking services all in one place, essential for those struggling with transportation, another IADL.
Finances can be a tricky subject to approach, but it's a serious topic that needs addressing. Luckily those struggling with IADLs are more likely to reach out as these activities tend to be less personal than ADLs.
We hope you can take some inspiration from this blog, including helpful tips and products. You can explore the full Tenura range via our website.
Above we have listed some solutions, but without talking to the person struggling with IADLs, you can't fully understand the best method of help, which is imperative when finding a suitable solution. We hope this blog has given you some good ideas. For more help on similar topics and exclusive product discounts, subscribe to the Tenura blog.
